Here at Alkington Grange Barns, we welcome one well behaved dog, to stay in four of our holiday cottages, Emma's Dairy, William's Hayloft, Oliver's Mill & Buttercups Hay Barn. These cottages both have enclosed gardens so that your dog is safe and secure. Each barn also has a stairgate at the bottom of the stairs to keep your dog safely downstairs.
There are lots of great places to visit that are Dog Friendly close by. If you want your dog to run free off the lead then why not, for a small fee, visit Let Loose Dog Park, located in Whixall, just a short drive away - More details below. We have listed a few walks below, they are great days out for all ages and all walking abilities.There are also plenty of local Dog Friendly Pubs, Cafes & Attractions too, they are also listed below.
The Combermere Arms is a classic Shropshire country inn to the bottom of its venerable boots. You'll find good local cask beers, freshly cooked food from a menu that changes slightly daily, decent and affordable wine and a good shelf of malt whiskies and gins (as well as the usual). It is Dog Friendly too.
The Black Bear is in Whitchurch, just below St Alkmunds church. With excellent cask beers, good food and welcoming to dogs this pub is perfect for everyone and Dog friendly too!
A feature of Jones’s Coffee House in Whitchurch is its fine coffee and fresh food using our own or locally sourced produce. Fronted by an amazing display of Art exhibitions. The atmosphere here is at once welcoming and relaxing.
The menu has a range of filled hot panini’s and ciabatta’s, homemade soups, jacket potatoes, sandwiches and salads. It also allows dogs!
The Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker is a former government-owned nuclear bunker located at Hack Green, Cheshire, England . Signpost showing directions to the secret bunker. The first military use of the area was in World War II, when a Starfish site was established at Hack Green. Cafe on site.

The World MOST interactive prison!! Shrewsbury Prison is an excellent day out for a family or group experience, offering a simple Tour with a cup of coffee or you can hire an Escape Room or do a Prison Break!! Whatever you do you will enjoy it.
It is also Dog Friendly!!
The Dog and Bull is a local pub for everyone, very family friendly with a large garden and a play area.
Whether its a quick pint, a lunchtime sandwich, a gossip over freshly ground coffee, a family meal or a romantic gesture - their food is excellent along with good service. It is Dog Friendly too!
The Horse & Jockey , which is located just outside Whitchurch on the way to Chester is a lovely pub. It has great Country pub food in a cosy atmosphere with many fresh ales and good wines available. It is family friendly for children and dogs!!
The Boathouse is located in a stunning position right by the beautiful mere of Ellesmere, which has excellent walking for all abilities. With a range of menus for Breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with a great children's menu. A welcoming venue with great food and perfect for a special occasion. It is Dog Friendly too.
Alderford lake is just 2 miles from your cottage and offers a fantastic array of Water Activities from the Aqua Park to Paddle Boarding and much more. There is a cafe on site and it is also Dog Friendly.
If you want to enjoy the Aqua Park then you will definitely need to Book ahead of your stay.
The Crocky Trail near Chester, is a great day out for the slightly older child. The day is filled with Sliding, Balancing, Swinging and Jumping and getting a little bit muddy!!! Great fun and not to be missed!!!

The impressive ruins of Moreton Corbet Castle are the product of over 500 years of building. The earliest surviving remains are those of a stone castle begun in about 1200, including a fine gatehouse. The Corbet family remodelled the castle in the 16th century, and the Elizabethan south wing is a rare survival from this period of a bold Italian-inspired design, which was devastated during the Civil War. Fine Corbet monuments fill the adjacent church. Free To Enter & Dogs allowed.
At the heart of Whittington Castle’s 12 acre site stands the remains of a 12th century Marcher original Norman Castle. Once the chief residence of the powerful Fitzwarine family, the castle is associated with much folklore & legend including Fulk Fitzwarine III, Shropshire’s own Robin Hood. Explore the grounds and enjoy a break in the café. Free to enter & Dogs allowed.
Beeston Castle, crowning a rocky crag and boasting spectacular views, Beeston is one of the most dramatically sited medieval castles in England. On a clear day you can see all the way from the Pennines to the Welsh mountains. With a 4,000 year history, a replica Bronze Age roundhouse and a 40-acre woodland park, Beeston Castle has something for everyone to enjoy. It is managed by English Heritage. Dogs welcome on a lead.
Holly Farm Garden Centre & Nursey is just 4 miles from your cottage and offers a wide range of plants and lovely gifts to buy. There is a cafe on site, so perfect to meet friends or family and it is also Dog Friendly.
Cholmondeley Castle near Nantwich, offers an early 19th century castle over looking 70 acres of sumptuous gardens, which display colour throughout the year. With the Temple & Folly Water Gardens, Glade, Arboretum & Rose Garden.
There is also Tearooms on site that offers cakes, coffee and light lunches.

Weston Park is a 17th century house situated in the heart of 1000 acres of Capability Brown Parkland. With a Woodland Adventure Playground, Giant Chess, Formal Gardens , Woodland Walks and a ride on the Miniature Railway, what more could you want for a fun packed day out in these beautiful surroundings. Dogs are allowed in the Park & Gardens on leads.
